ROME, FROM MOUNT AVENTINE

Rome, From Mount Aventine (1835)Turner

This painting portrays the city of Rome on the Aventine Hill, one of the Seven Hills on which ancient Rome was founded. This is one of some of Turner's city paintings, and at first it was described by the Morning Post as "one of those spectacular paintings with which Mr Turner dazzles his creativity and confuses all criticism: it is beyond praise."

Rome, From Mount Aventine, sold for £ 30.3 m at Sotheby's in London in December 2014, which is the auction price for Turner as of June 2016.
This was also the best price for any British artist ever priced at auction until the 20th century.
